Vale - Charlie "Chicka" Saunders
The Woy Woy Roosters are saddened to advise of the passing of one of its finest players Charlie “Chicka” Saunders, after a long illness.
Charlie emerged as a star for the Roosters in the 1960s, during a period when Woy Woy was marking its mark as a force in Central Coast (Group 12) Rugby League. As a speedy Winger in the Roosters ‘C’ Grade (Under 18s) side in 1960 Charlie scored 11 tries as Woy Woy marched to a Premiership win over Erina, the first of his many Premierships for the Club.
‘B’ Grade (Reserve Grade) Premierships came Charlie’s way in 1962, 1964 and 1965. During these seasons Charlie was a try scoring machine for the Club, crossing for 13 tries in 1962 and 5 in 64’ and another 13 in 1965 (in the Centres) as Woy Woy marched to Grand Final victories over the Erina Eagles (62/64)and Ourimbah 7-2 in 1965.
Charlie’s run of Grand Final victories were to continue as he moved into the 1st Grade ranks in 1966, taking his place on the Wing as part of what is considered arguably one of the Club’s finest ever First Grade teams. Scoring 10 tries during the Season, the Roosters defeated Erina 11-9 in the decider for an undefeated Premiership for the Club. 1967 saw Charlie once again figure in Woy Woy’s First Grade campaign, his form being recognized as an inaugural member of the Group 12 Representative side. The accolades continued as Charlie contributed to the sides 27-7 Grand Final win over Wyong.
By this time Charlie was an integral member of the Club’s First Grade side, which was defeated in the 1968 decider, before claiming his third First Grade Premiership in 1970 as the Roosters defeated Gosford in the Grand Final. 1970 proved to be a watershed year for Charlie as he topped the Group 12 First Grade try scoring list with 18 three pointers.
The Roosters were again in the hunt in 1971(with Charlie yet again on the flank) but were upset by Wyong in the Grand Final, before bouncing back with a Premiership win over The Entrance. During 1972 Charlie Saunders played his 100th First Grade game for the Club (only the third player to do so at the time) before claiming his 4th First Grade title for Woy Woy.
Charlie wound up his decorated playing career for the Roosters as Captain-Coach of the Club’s Reserve Grade side in 1973, making the Semi Finals and finishing second in the Reserve Grade Group 12 Player Of The Year.
In the annals of the Roosters History, Charlie ‘Chicka’ Saunders will go down as one of its finest. Playing in ten Senior Grade Grand Finals Charlie has a Record of Four 1st Grade, three ‘B’ Grade and one ‘C’Grade Premiership victories, along with the distinction of having played in excess of 100 First Grade Games for the Club. Charlie will always be remembered fondly by everyone associated with the Woy Woy Club.

Under 18s Competition For 2012
The 2012 Competition has now been changed to 1st Grade, Res Grade, Open Age, Under 18's & an optional Under 17s. The Roosters will be fielding an Under 18 team which will be coached by Daniel Nicholls (0421807340. A meeting for players will be held in the coming weeks.

Roosters Juniors To Celebrate 50 Years
Woy Woy Junior Rugby League Football Club will be proudly celebrating their 50th year in 2012
The club has a number of social and fundraising events planned for past and present Players, Coaches, Managers, Trainers, Committee Members and Supporters with a Season Launch and Family Picnic Day set down for Sunday 15th April 2012.
A return to the Club's spiritual home Woy Woy Oval is planned for our first home game of the season and Trivia Karaoke is on the cards after last year’s huge success.
The entire club will have new playing stripes after a competition open to all 2011 players with Jasmine Wolfe’s design being voted the most popular and with the 16’s wearing a sky blue jersey honouring the very first Woy Woy Seniors Club Jersey with supporter’s jerseys available for sale.
As part of the celebrations the club will be holding a re-union
on Saturday 9th June at Woy Woy Leagues Club and we are seeking any information, newspaper articles, photos, Yearbooks etc. If you have any information that you would like to share with us it would be greatly appreciated.
